The Most Exciting Thing About The Internet
I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who visit this site and participate online. As I make my living by helping others create online businesses or help solve business problems with Internet software, sometimes I forget why the Internet is such an amazing phenomenon and why I truly love what I do.
This evening my wife and I joined a couple friends for dinner and hanging out. We then visited the video store and bought 4 more DVDs to add to my growing collection (I love movies). We watched one, “The Break Up”, and just before retiring for the evening, I decided to open up the laptop and check my email (yes I’m an addict). The coolest thing happened…
In my email was an automatic alert from a site that my company sponsored called MontanaWorker.com. It is intended on providing a free platform for Montanans to post available jobs and everyone to maintain a current copy of their resume online. The alert included a new resume posted from someone whom I’ve never met in a city over 100 miles away. The thrill of someone using a service that I provided, not knowing them or ever meeting them but we’re all connected with this thing we call the Internet - that’s what it’s all about. I literally see things like that and I want to call everyone I know who owns a business and try to help this person find a job. For those who know me, they know that is usually exactly what I do and why I chose to provide this service for others - leveraging what I do and know to help more people.
Now if that were the end of my story, it’d be kind of mushy, right? Well I just get such a rush when I see people using and enjoying things that I help build it gets the best of me at times. Just ask my wife how often I stand on a sidewalk that my grandfather and I poured and comment on the broom finish. I mixed up a batch of concrete a few months ago and created a concrete pad for a new mailbox stand and literally walked by it every day for a week and stared. I love building things and it’s even that much better when others enjoy and benefit from them too.
Anyhow, I was pretty excited and this reminded me how my customers feel when people begin shopping their stores for the first time (I save their excited emails and that is what drives me, that personal touch and them sharing the excitement of their first online order). With this little burst of energy before closing the laptop (sorry, Notebook for the Mac world), I thought I would write a little on my personal blog.
I entered my website address and what do you know, more people voted for the top Caribbean destination in the poll to the right. People I may not know, or ever meet, participated in my little survey and I’ve just got to say “thank you” and “how cool is that?”
I have some exciting projects and technology we’re working on and this month, there should be a lot more activity online. Thanks again for visiting and I’ll do my best to keep the information somewhat informative and minimally entertaining.
