For My Japanese Visitors - Arigatou

January 31st, 2007 by Mike Sparr

I notice that a lot of visitors to my site are from Japan and throughout Asia so I just wanted to thank my Japanese guests for visiting.  I like visiting Japan and although I haven’t been back in several years, I do plan on visiting again soon.  My next trip I hope to explore more of Japan instead of just staying in Tokyo although I love the food in Shibuya Ku, shopping in Ginza Ku and night life in Ropongi (of course, I’m gaijin).  Also, Matty O, if you’re one of those guests I promise we’ll meet up this go round.
Arigatou, dou itashimashite.  :)   My favorite: toire wa doko desu ka.  Don’t worry, I’ll find it!

Thanks For Voting

January 31st, 2007 by Mike Sparr

After tallying up the votes, it is decided.  We are going to visit friends in Turks & Caicos.  I’ll come up with a new poll but appreciate those who participated in our “Best Caribbean Destination”.  Eventually we’ll hit them all; we really loved Cozumel and I’ll report on Turks & Caicos / Miami likely at the end of April.

In between now and then I may have some business travel to the west coast, visiting Seattle and Portland and likely San Francisco.  Mid-March we’ll be in Las Vegas.

Thanks again and I’ll come up with some interesting things to write about (or not, but still write anyway, ha ha).

7 Wierd Things

January 29th, 2007 by Mike Sparr

My friend Wenmei, our “Team SF” genius, asked me to keep the 7 things “IT” blog tag rolling and normally I never do those things but why the heck not. I have a feeling this is a lot harder than I imagine to think of 7 wierd things about yourself and list them. Here’s my try:

Hard Boiled Eggs While Camping

January 28th, 2007 by Mike Sparr

I learned a very cool tip this evening I thought I would share.  You can make hard-boiled eggs while camping by filling a styrofoam cup with water and placing on the coals or in your campfire.  One would think that it would burn but instead, the cup will burn down only to the level of the water.  You can boil eggs and then use tongs to remove it.  - Happy Camping!

High Flying and Happy Birthday

January 21st, 2007 by Mike Sparr

First I’d like to send a birthday “shout out” to my buddy Jamy Frost. He just turned the big 3-0 today so let’s all cheer! :-) My day is coming in exactly 2 months (March 21) so I cannot tease him too much longer. Brandon is next though (Feb 15).

Jeff Foxworthy on Montana

January 21st, 2007 by Mike Sparr

I thought these were pretty funny and being from Montana, I do actually understand every one of them.  Missoula is a little different than most of the state but 90% of these things could likely be checked off the list, ha ha.  Enjoy!

How to fix PHP error with Mac OS X 10.4.4 or later update

January 18th, 2007 by Mike Sparr

It took some searching but I learned that the Apache config file with the update was modified and turned off PHP. The fix is to do the following:

Mac Airport Issue on Intel Chips with OS 10.4.5

January 18th, 2007 by Mike Sparr

Ever since the last couple updates of the Mac OSX software, I’ve been upset with things breaking.  Two months ago it killed the PHP server running on my machine and I’ve been too busy to find out how to get it running again.  This past month I cannot automatically connect to the wireless networks in my offices even though they are in the preferred network list and used to work.

I searched Apple’s support forum and found everyone else is having the same issues (with Airport wi-fi auto connect).  For the past month I’ve settled with having to open Network Preferences every morning and night and switching the priority of the network name or to “Automatic” mode and “praying”.

Well the forums suggested a fix and that was to delete the networks listed in the preferred network list and insert them from scratch.  It worked for my home network and I’ll try it at the office in the morning.  I still haven’t found a fix to get PHP running again which is very annoying.

Here’s the thread about the Airport wi-fi auto connection issue:

Office view of Mountains

January 15th, 2007 by Mike Sparr

I’m posting this just for my buddy Rich who lives in Denver Colorado. He recently saw a show in the History Channel that spoke about Glacial Lake Missoula and history of where I live. I try to explain how beautiful it is and have some great aerial photos I’ll find of the valley but here are 3 pics taken just now out my office window of Lolo Peak and Blue Mountain that surround the West/Southwest side of town. There are mountains on all sides of the valley which is perphaps 7-8 miles in diameter (similar geographic area as San Francisco).

Las Vegas CES 2007

January 11th, 2007 by Mike Sparr

This year my wife Jamie accompanied me to CES. My purpose this year was mainly to network with select companies and then simply enjoy the show, and Las Vegas. We met up with some local friends the first day and then dined in some nice venues throughout the week, taking in the Lance Burton magic show and hitting a club one evening (thanks Kim and Julie!). We were fortunate enough to receive an upgrade on our already outrageously-priced hotel room (average $400+/night during CES week) and enjoyed a suite that normally cost double that amount on regular days.

LG to unveil dual-format HD DVD and Blu Ray disc player at CES

January 4th, 2007 by Mike Sparr

I will be at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week and am a subscriber to various e-zines.  I just received this alert about LGs new dual-format high-def DVD player and thought I would share.  Several friends have inquired as to whether they should purchase a player and like we all may recall, the “war” between VHS and Beta and Sony vs. Toshiba on compact discs, Laserdiscs vs. DVD and now HD DVD there always emerges a standard, so I recommended waiting.  Well LG decided to make the earlier adopters’ pain a little more bearable with their new product.
