Build a Cedar Fence using chain link fence posts - part 1

In my last post (below) I upgraded the electrical service to the house to support a hot tub and any other needs in the future. Prior to the delivery of the hot tub, I decided to install a 6-foot cedar privacy fence using the existing chain link fence posts. Given my neighbor has a dog, we thought it would be best to leave the chain link side towards his yard to protect our fence.

Given it’s Sunday, I bought my supplies at Home Depot as the local cedar products shop was closed and prices are comparable. I bought treated 2×4s for the rails which I’ll attach using metal clamps to the existing fence posts. I backed up the truck to the west end of the patio to drop off all the lumber and materials.

I layed out the lumber and stacked the fencing as we’ll have to stain it first before installing.

Nothing’s easy w/ our house. We had to use a porta band saw to cut a portion of this mounting bracket given how close the end post is to the house.

We used these brackets for the line posts.

We removed the chain link for our portion of fence and leveled the first rail. We then took it down and used an L bracket and screws to square and connect the adjacent rail between ours and the neighbor’s house.

Given we had to make several trips back to Home Depot as we changed the design slightly and the brackets didn’t fit our line posts, the project went past daylight hours but a flashlight and determination to get to a good stopping point before ending prevailed. The rails are all level and secured and next we stain the fencing and install.

I’m looking to do the same thing. I want to go with 8 foot, not sure if the existing metal posts will support it. what are those brackets called?
    Thanks,
    Eric

I bought them at Home Depot in the fencing section. They are “line post mounting brackets” but not sure on actual product name. If you explain what you want to do, they will know what you need. They have some in the Hardware section but the ones I used were in the chain link fencing section. I hope that helps!

Thanks man, I’ve decided to go with a 6 foot fence seeing that I live in the FL panhandle. You’re awesome, keep doing what you do.
