I use a mac and there are some cool free widgets/apps out there that sync w/ bluetooth phones to allow you to send SMS from your widget (via your phone), etc. Your need is so common I am sure there is something. They also have a web admin interface for it and I believe you can import contacts. I'm unsure on true sync though. Hope that helps. It then backs up your phone nightly and helps if ever lost or replace phone.
