New Years Treat - Install Apps on iPod Touch

I had a couple days off and so did everyone else. Well that didn’t stop me from jailbreaking my iPod Touch, installing new apps and on the non-geeky side, ripping down paneling and knocking out a wall in my basement to make a large family room. We’ll ignore the latter project for now and I thought I’d share my discovery for opening up your iPod Touch to install at a minimum, the same apps that are included on the iPhone.

Screen Snaps of my iPod Touch (now multiple pages of apps):

Read below to find out how to install additional applications on your iPod Touch. No tech support offered but it does work, all the steps are included and some additional snapshots at the bottom of this post. I hope this helps!

ORIGINAL TUTORIAL (I am using Intel-based Macbook Pro if that matters):

http://www.touchdev.net/wiki/Jailbreak_1.1.2 (I used this tutorial but a few steps were non-trivial so my final ‘how it worked’ is below w/ some snaps)

Prerequisites (download the following 2 files using Firefox browser):

  1. iPod Touch 1.1.1 firmware file
  2. Jailbreak 1.1.2 zip file

Perform the following steps:

There is a great online resource that walks you through the jailbreak process. I found a few points difficult so I wanted to get you started on the right path with exactly what worked for me. To make it easy, make sure you have the following versions running:

  1. Determine your software versions. Update your iTunes and iPod and make sure you are running iTunes 7.5 and iPod Firmware 1.1.2. To check iTunes, find the “About” menu and it should state what version. To check iPod, click on Settings, Then General and it should state 1.1.2.
  2. After you verify you are on version 7.5 of iTunes, plug in your iPod using the USB connector. It will load within iTunes (you can optionally synch but I’d just cancel by sliding your finger on the iPod screen).
  3. WIN: (CTRL+click) / MAC: (option+click) the Update
  4. This should have opened the “Browse” dialog window allowing you to select a local file.
  5. Select the Firmware 1.1.1 that you downloaded previously and allow iTunes to update your firmware.
  6. You may see “your software is out of date. the current version is 1.1.2″ - DO NOT UPDATE (yet)
  7. After completing the update and restarting your iPod, open your Safari browser on the iPod Touch
  8. Visit: http://jailbreakme.com - it will recognize your device and follow the on screen instruction
  9. This will jail break your iPod touch (you MUST have version 1.1.1 running beforehand) and install the Installer application.
  10. After some restarts, you should see an Installer icon on your desktop (a.k.a. SpringBoard)
  11. Start up the Installer program.
  12. Click the “Install” option at the bottom of the screen.
  13. Click the “All Packages” option.
  14. Scroll down to find OktoPrep application. Install it.
  15. After completed, you will then update your iPod using iTunes back to 1.1.2 firmware.
  16. Make sure your iPod Touch is connected and you will see the “update to 1.1.2″.
  17. Click the “Update” button (this time not holding any other keys)
  18. Allow iTunes to update your iPod touch. After completed and restarted, you will NOT see any icons on your SpringBoard - that’s OK.
  19. Click the eject icon within iTunes but leave your iPod touch connected via USB cable.
  20. Unzip the 2nd file you downloaded onto your desktop (or wherever you want it).
  21. PC: click on windows.bat Mac: double click jailbreak.jar (click SSH checkbox and run w/ defaults)
  22. Congratulations! you have a jailbroken 1.1.2 iPod touch.
  23. Use the Installer application and install apps you want.
  24. To Install the iPhone apps, read these instructions: Install iPhone Apps on iPod Touch

NOTE: if you have errors on Windows, you may have to turn off firewalls and retry

NOTE: if you install the SummerBoard app (recommended as it allows you to add unlimited apps and swipe from screen to screen), you MUST turn off your iPod touch by holding down the top power button for several seconds, then swiping the “Turn Off” slider when it appears. Then hold the power button again for a couple seconds and it will reboot your iPod touch. Thereafter, when you install apps and themes, it will automatically restart your SpringBoard. :-)

See pictures below:

if using iTunes 7.5, simply hold your CTRL (or option for Mac) button down before clicking Update

You will download the 1.1.1 firmware (beware several hundred MB download so have a drink while waiting) and 1.1.2 jailbreak zip files. You might as well unzip the jailbreak file as you’ll use it in your last step.

in Mac, you double click on jailbreak.jar (PC click on windows.bat to run the jar file)

I would click on Install SSH as well and then just click “Jailbreak!”.

Good luck!
